Excursion Shabolovka Cluster of historical industrial heritage

We continue our description of the tours of the Moscow Industrial project, which are held as part of the International Urban Forum.

Shabolovka Cluster of historical industrial heritage is a signature tour by Inna Krylova which tells the story of Shabolovka’s mechanical and textile industries from the 18th century to the present.

On the tour, we explored the area sprawling from Shabolovka to Leninsky Prospekt.

We examined the house of the merchant Ivan Kushashnikov, which was built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It is located on Donskaya Street. In the 18th century, the site was the home of a textile mill with six looms, owned by the merchant Ivan Kushashnikov. Today, it is the home of a vocational school, the House of Research and Technical Creativity for Youth.

We learned the history of one of the country’s largest enterprises: a metalworking and machine-building plant founded by brothers Eduard and Fyodor Bromley in Moscow. The plant has been renamed several times during its existence: Bromley Brothers Society, Bromley Brothers Mechanical Plants Society, and, after 1922, the Efremov Red Proletarian Plant.

Pyotr Goujon, who moved to Russia at the beginning of the 19th century, built a silk weaving mill called Shpulka (“spool”). In 1883, he established a major enterprise, the Moscow Metallurgical Plant, which was referred to as the Goujon Plant. It was a cutting-edge production facility for its time. Later, it became the prominent Hammer and Sickle plant. The land is now the site of a residential complex, while the building of Goujon’s former factory in Shabolovka became the home of the Higher School of Economics.

The Moscow Industrial project has been prepared by the Government of Moscow’s Complex for Economic Policy and Moscow Industrial Relations as part of the Moscow Industrial Quarters program for the comprehensive development of former industrial zones, in partnership with the CENTER Lab International Urban Laboratory.
